Mississippi does not license firearms dealers. Any person dealing in deadly weapons (including handguns, but not long guns) must pay a one-time “privilege tax” of $100, however.1 In addition, firearms dealers are subject to state laws governing gun sales generally. Pursuant to the Brady Act, federally licensed firearms dealers must conduct background checks on prospective purchasers each time the dealer transfers a firearm. See the Mississippi Background Checks section.
In 2012, Mississippi repealed a law that required sellers of handguns to keep records of all handgun sales.2 For additional information, see the Mississippi Retention of Sales / Background Check Records section.
