Louisiana has no law requiring most firearms to be registered. Short barreled shotguns and rifles, shotguns or rifles modified to have an overall length of less than 26 inches, concealable firearms with obliterated serial numbers, machine guns, and mufflers or silencers for any firearm must be registered with the Department of Public Safety and Corrections.1 As of 2024, Louisiana government entities are expressly prohibited from keeping any registry of privately owned firearms or the owners of privately owned firearms.2
