In 2023, Maine made it a crime to knowingly or intentionally sell or transfer a firearm to a person who is prohibited from owning, possessing or having under that person’s control a firearm pursuant to state law.1

Maine’s law regarding firearms sales records prohibits giving a false or fictitious name to a firearms dealer.2

In 2024 Maine partially closed the background check loophole by enacting a law requiring a background check on the purchaser of a firearm for private sales at gun shows or other advertised private sales.3
