Giffords Law Center Honors Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Warns Against a Swift Replacement
Washington, DC—Giffords Law Center’s Litigation Director, Hannah Shearer, honored Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg while warning Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell about a swift replacement that would impact issues like gun safety.

“Make no mistake, Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell will try to replace the inimitable Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg with an illegitimate justice who does not represent the views of the American people. At a time when more Americans than ever are demanding an end to hate-fueled gun violence, President Trump has already put forward a list of potential nominees with radical views of the Second Amendment that would jeopardize every gun safety law in the country. The gun lobby is ready and willing to champion a new justice who will stand in the way of the firearm policies supported by the overwhelming majority of Americans.
“As we mourn Justice Ginsburg, a trailblazer for women’s rights and justice for all Americans, we must reject Trump and McConnell’s attempt to subvert our Constitution to promote gun lobby profits. Thanks to President Trump’s radical lower-court nominations, we have already seen rulings striking down commonsense gun safety laws that have been upheld for decades by judges appointed by Republican and Democratic presidents alike. An adverse ruling in the Supreme Court could put decades of gun safety progress at risk. Now is the time to ensure that the demands of Americans to live in a country safe from gun violence are respected and upheld.”
