Shooting in Boulder Latest Reminder of Desperate Need for Action on Gun Violence
Washington, DC —Today, multiple people, including a law enforcement officer, were killed at a King Soopers grocery store in Boulder, Colorado. Giffords, the gun violence prevention organization led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, continues to monitor the situation. This is the third mass shooting in less than a week, with eight people killed in the Atlanta area and one killed and five more shot in Philadelphia.
Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, Co-Founder, Giffords:
“Today it’s a tragedy in Boulder, Colorado. This past weekend it was a house party in Philadelphia. And last week it was an armed attack on Asian American women in the Atlanta area. As we await more information out of Colorado, we must remember that every victim has a name. They had hopes, dreams, and people who loved them. They are no longer with us because of preventable tragedies. My heart sinks for those who are awaiting news of their family and friends in Boulder.
“This is an especially personal tragedy for me. I survived a shooting at a grocery store, in a tragedy that devastated my beloved community of Tucson. It’s been 10 years, and countless American communities have had to face something similar. This is not normal, and it doesn’t have to be this way. It’s beyond time for our leaders to take action.”
Tomorrow Giffords Law Center Executive Director Robyn Thomas will testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee at a hearing titled “Constitutional and Common Sense Steps to Reduce Gun Violence.” The hearing will unquestionably take on even more urgency in the wake of this latest tragedy, and Thomas’ testimony will highlight actionable, research-proven solutions to reducing gun violence in America. The hearing can be viewed at 10 a.m. ET on the Judiciary Committee livestream.
