Oregon Legislature Shows Courage: Ghost Guns Ban Passed to Safeguard Communities
Washington DC — GIFFORDS, the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, lauded leadership in the Oregon legislature for passing critical legislation that bans ghost guns. GIFFORDS applauded Representatives Lisa Reynolds, Dacia Grayber, Jason Kropf, Paul Evans, and Senators James Manning and Floyd Prozanski for demonstrating critical leadership and efforts to move this bill to the governor’s desk.
“Ghost guns present a clear and present danger to public safety,” said David Pucino, GIFFORDS Chief Deputy Counsel. “Do-it-yourself firearms can be untraceable or undetectable, and they are increasingly made and sold by gun traffickers and used to commit violent crimes. Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum and legislative leaders in both chambers worked tirelessly to ensure that this lifesaving legislation could reach the governor’s desk. We applaud the swift action taken by the legislature and we hope to see other states follow Oregon’s lead.”
Ghost guns are untraceable by law enforcement and can be obtained without a background check. These guns pose a grave threat to public safety, and people who are legally prohibited from owning firearms are able to create them without consequences in most states.
