GIFFORDS Applauds Waiting Periods in Maine

Washington DC — Today, GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, applauded waiting periods becoming law in Maine, after months of advocacy from GIFFORDS and local groups. The 72-hour waiting period provides a buffer between time of sale and ownership, helping to reduce gun suicides and impulsive acts of violence.

Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords

“I’m so proud of the gun safety advocates who stepped up and demanded change after the tragic mass shooting in Lewiston. Legislators listened to them and passed a waiting period, which is a commonsense, popular measure that will save lives while upholding Maine’s long and proud history of responsible gun ownership. We’re making progress, and I know this is just the beginning.”

Last October, a gunman killed 18 people and injured 13 more at a bowling alley and restaurant in Lewiston, shocking Mainers and drawing national attention to the state’s gun laws.
