GIFFORDS: Gov. Tim Walz will be a strong vice president to stop gun violence
WASHINGTON — Today, GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released a statement after it was announced that Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will be the Democratic vice presidential nominee. Vice President Harris has been a strong gun safety champion in the White House, from breaking a nearly 30 year logjam on gun safety legislation by supporting the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, to leading the Office of Gun Violence Prevention.
“Governor Walz is a strong gun safety champion, and GIFFORDS will work hard to ensure that he and Vice President Harris are successful. Gun violence is a top concern for Americans this election cycle and we know the Harris-Walz ticket is the only one that will stand up to the gun lobby and save lives. With 91 days to go, GIFFORDS will do everything we can to send Vice President Harris and Governor Walz to the White House in November,” said GIFFORDS Executive Director Emma Brown.
Governor Tim Walz’s record on gun safety:
- In the US House of Representatives, Governor Walz voted to expand background checks, to prevent people on the No Fly list from being able to purchase firearms, and to fund CDC research into gun violence.
- As governor, he passed significant gun safety legislation in Minnesota, including a background checks and extreme risk protection order bill.
- Governor Walz is a responsible gun owner.
- Governor Walls and Congresswoman Gabby Giffords served together in the U.S. House, both freshmen members in 2007.
