Governor Newsom signs strong gun safety package into law

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, praised Governor Newsom for signing a robust gun safety package into law.

“Governor Newsom has consistently positioned California at the forefront of the national battle against gun violence. By signing bills that effectively remove firearms from dangerous situations and enshrining the California Office of Gun Violence Prevention in statute, he ensures our state’s gun safety measures grow stronger and protect more people. GIFFORDS thanks Governor Newsom and California legislative leaders for their continued commitment to saving lives,” said Ethan Murray, GIFFORDS State Policy Attorney.

Included in the gun safety package signed into law were bills improving firearm relinquishment, protecting our elections, and establishing a permanent Office of Gun Violence Prevention. Notably, this package also includes the PEACE Act, which offers critical new protections for California’s voters and dedicated civil servants who administer elections. This bill is a result of a joint report on guns and voting GIFFORDS co-authored with the Brennan Center for Justice.
