Gabby Giffords condemns Trump’s call for Liz Cheney to be shot

“As a survivor of political violence, I ask my fellow Arizonans and American patriots to reject Trump’s calls for violence and retribution. Let’s elect Kamala Harris and put this dark chapter behind us once and for all.”

WASHINGTON – Former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, founder of the national gun violence prevention organization GIFFORDS, today condemned former President Donald Trump’s call at an Arizona rally for former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney to be shot and killed. This summer, Giffords spoke out against all political violence after an assassination attempt against Trump.

At a rally in Glendale, Ariz., Trump said of Cheney, “Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her, OK? Let’s see how she feels about it, you know, when the guns are trained on her face.”

Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords:

“Declaring that a person should be shot and killed simply for supporting a different candidate is un-American. Any Republican who claims to respect the constitution and rule of law has a responsibility to speak out against Donald Trump’s dangerous comments immediately.

“My family holds this country close to our hearts. I was shot and nearly killed for serving the people of Arizona. My husband has dedicated his life in service as a Navy pilot and astronaut who continues to serve his country in the Senate. Those who serve this country know that truly loving America requires opposing all forms of political violence.

“As Vice President Harris warned this week, Trump is not ‘thinking about how to make your life better. This is someone who is unstable, obsessed with revenge, consumed with grievance and out for unchecked power.’

“As a survivor of political violence, I ask my fellow Arizonans and American patriots to reject Trump’s calls for violence and retribution. Let’s elect Kamala Harris and put this dark chapter behind us once and for all.”
