GIFFORDS condemns racist slur from Michigan open carry activist, urges passage of lifesaving measures
WASHINGTON — Today, GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, condemned hateful comments made by former Michigan Open Carry (MOC) organizer Avi Rachlin during a legislative hearing on new measures to fight gun violence.
In May 2024, Rachlin boasted after being “appointed” to “leadership” and receiving the “official backing” of Michigan Open Carry, the “premier organization in Michigan promoting the lawful open carry of a holstered handgun.” Rachlin, known on social media as @Avsterbone, frequently engaged in bigoted and hateful commentary before, during and after his time as an organizer with MOC.
“The gun lobby in Michigan has a serious problem—they are overrun by hateful, anti-government extremists. Just this week alone, a Michigan open carry activist disrupted a hearing with racist lies and used the N-word, while a militia-aligned ammunition company unleashed a vulgar C-word filled tirade and threatened the lives of both government officials and journalists,” said GIFFORDS Vice President of Communications Chris Harris. “GIFFORDS Gun Owners for Safety is proud to be an alternative for the vast majority of gun owners who despise racism and violence, and appreciate the responsibility that accompanies firearm ownership.”
“This despicable episode underscores the importance of showing Michiganders that lawmakers will not be intimidated by hate. Michigan legislators must do the right thing and pass these critical measures to fund community violence intervention programs, crack down on untraceable ghost guns and hold bad actors accountable,” Harris added.
Earlier today, GIFFORDS joined a coalition of gun violence prevention groups in support of this lifesaving legislative package.
