GUN SAFETY VICTORY: Hillary Scholten reelected to Congress

WASHINGTON —GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, congratulated Rep. Hillary Scholten on her reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives. Congresswoman Giffords campaigned with Scholten in Grand Rapids earlier this year.

“Congresswoman Hillary Scholten has proven herself to be a true champion for Michigan families and a steadfast advocate for gun violence prevention,” said former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. “Having experienced the devastating impact of gun violence in her own community, Representative Scholten brings a deeply personal understanding to this fight. As a mother and former Justice Department attorney, she knows that commonsense gun safety measures are essential to keeping our communities safe. Her dedicated work on the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and her unwavering support for universal background checks and getting ghost guns off our streets demonstrates the kind of courageous leadership West Michigan needs. I am thrilled to congratulate Congresswoman Scholten on her reelection and I look forward to continuing our work together to build a safer America for all.”

As a mom and an engaged member of her community, Scholten is familiar with the devastating realities of gun violence, and she deeply understands the important role of commonsense gun laws in ensuring that our schools, grocery stores, movie theaters and places of worship are safe for everyone. This issue is personal to her, too—tragically, she once came home from dropping her sons off at school to find out a neighbor and friend had become a victim of gun violence. Scholten knows that her personal loss is far too familiar for so many Americans, and in office she’s been tireless in her fight to tackle our country’s epidemic of violence as a member of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force.
