GIFFORDS statement urging Michigan lawmakers to advance gun violence prevention bills before end of session
WASHINGTON — Today, GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released the following statement in response to reports of Michigan lawmakers refusing attendance before the end of the legislative session.
These absences would leave the Michigan House and Senate without the needed Democratic majorities to get lifesaving gun prevention bills across the finish line.
“Michigan lawmakers are on the cusp of passing critical reform to reduce gun violence and save lives in Detroit and throughout the state,” said GIFFORDS Executive Director Emma Brown. “Right now in Lansing, the gun lobby is counting on State Sen. Sylvia Santana and State Rep. Karen Whitsett to do its dirty work by refusing to show up to vote. It is not an exaggeration to say that lives will be lost in Michigan if these laws are blocked. As GIFFORDS’ work in Michigan continues to increase in the coming years, we look forward to supporting lawmakers and candidates who advance gun safety and commit to showing up when lives are on the line.”
