DISGRACEFUL: House GOP marks anniversary of Tucson mass shooting with push for concealed carry reciprocity
Bill introduced on anniversary of Gabby Giffords’ assassination attempt
WASHINGTON — GIFFORDS released the following statement on Wednesday after House Republicans introduced a dangerous bill that would allow national concealed carry reciprocity 14 years to the day after the mass shooting in Tucson, Arizona, where Congresswoman Gabby Giffords was shot in the head. Learn more about the dangers of concealed carry reciprocity here.
“14 years ago today, a mass murderer shot Congresswoman Gabby Giffords in the head and killed a member of her staff, a nine-year-old girl, a federal judge, and three other innocent people. He injured 12 others. It’s shameful that House Republicans chose this day, when we are honoring their memories, to prioritize their gun lobby donors over public safety,” said GIFFORDS Executive Director Emma Brown. “From fighting commonsense background checks to repealing all training and permitting requirements, the gun lobby and its allies in government are obsessed with letting guns end up in the wrong hands. States that have weakened standards for concealed carry saw a 15% increase in violent crime—Republicans want that to happen nationwide.
“Gun violence is the leading killer of kids and teens in this country. This isn’t about politics or partisanship – and most gun owners and Republicans agree. It’s about public safety and basic decency. Despite unfathomable challenges, Gabby responded to her assassination attempt by devoting her life to saving lives from gun violence. GIFFORDS is proud to stand with her today and all days,” Brown added.
