National gun violence prevention groups respond to Trump administration’s attack on law firm Perkins Coie LLP, Jenner & Block LLP, and Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP.
GIFFORDS Law Center and Brady join a slate of about two dozen nonprofits and NGOs on amicus briefs that condemn the Trump administration’s punitive attacks on Perkins Coie LLP, Jenner & Block LLP, and Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP.
“Targeting law firms based on the clients they represent is unconstitutional and antidemocratic, running afoul of the First Amendment and undermining the rule of law. GIFFORDS Law Center is proud to join fellow NGOs in standing with Perkins Coie, Jenner & Block, Wilmer Cutler, and Pickering Hale and Dorr, against this gross overstep,” said GIFFORDS Executive Director Emma Brown.
“By targeting these law firms, President Trump is trying to silence groups that he does not agree with through intimidation and retribution,” said Brady President Kris Brown. “Nonprofits like Brady that rely on these firms to defend life-saving gun laws and hold negligent gun industry actors accountable will suffer the consequences — as will everyday Americans whose livelihoods are under threat by our nation’s gun violence crisis. This affront to our First Amendment rights and attack on our access to counsel continues the administration’s descent into autocratic tendencies and is part of a broad, ongoing attack on efforts to reduce gun violence, including the erasing of data and science on gun violence and rescission of life-saving gun violence prevention policies. That is why Brady joins two dozen nonprofits in urging the court to safeguard Perkins Coie, Jenner & Block, Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr, and firms like them.”
