Trump budget makes America more dangerous

Radical budget guts funding for law enforcement, background checks and critical crime fighting programs

WASHINGTON —GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, responded to the White House’s release of the 2027 proposed budget that weakens public safety.

“Donald Trump doesn’t care about keeping American families safe. If he did, he wouldn’t gut support for local law enforcement on the front line. He wouldn’t defund the background checks system that keeps guns out of the hands of dangerous people. He wouldn’t zero out bipartisan funding for violence intervention or school mental health workers,” said GIFFORDS Executive Director Emma Brown. “Donald Trump isn’t concerned with preventing gun crime and this budget tells us everything we need to know about his priorities — it shows he’s willing to put our communities at risk to enrich gun industry CEOs. It’s corrupt, and it’s another reason why Americans no longer trust this White House to keep them safe.”

TL;DR — Trump’s dangerous budget:

  • ZERO FUNDING FOR GUN BACKGROUND CHECKS, despite the FBI requesting it
  • CUTS $181 million to fight violence against women
  • CUTS $39 million from local law enforcement training & development
  • ELIMINATES community violence intervention funding — a $50 million CUT
  • ELIMINATES school mental health services and training — a $164 million CUT
  • ELIMINATES firearm injury and mortality prevention research — a $25 million CUT
  • ELIMINATES funding to prosecute hate crimes — a $17 million CUT
  • CUTS $7 million from STOP School Violence Program
