Growing up in a military family in Houston, Representative Christian Menefee learned the value of service and hard work. He was the first person in his family to graduate from college and became the youngest and first Black person elected as Harris County Attorney. In this role, he successfully fought against attempts to restrict voting rights, held corporations accountable for polluting vulnerable neighborhoods, and protected families from price gouging during natural disasters. Representative Menefee has a record of getting results, and he has been working eagerly to build on this legacy in Washington DC, where he’s taken on tough issues like fighting gun violence.
Representative Menefee knows that gun violence is an emergency that is tearing apart families and communities in Houston and across the country. Sadly, this pain has even touched his own family. As Harris County Attorney, he stood with survivors of gun violence, joined legal fights, and called out corrupt lawmakers who blocked basic reforms. When he was elected to Congress, Representative Menefee introduced the Kimberly Vaughan Firearm Safe Storage Act. This legislation is named after a victim of the 2018 Santa Fe High School mass shooting and aims to increase education on responsible gun storage, prevent tragedies caused by unsecured firearms, and reduce family fire incidents. In the House, Representative Menefee will continue championing lifesaving gun safety policies by banning assault weapons and bump stocks, closing background check loopholes, and limiting high-capacity magazines. He also supports restarting the federal Office of Gun Violence Prevention.
Representative Menefee is a father of two young boys who knows that no child should grow up in a country where active shooter drills are a fact of life. He understands that every person deserves to feel safe at school, at home, and in houses of worship, and is certain that change is possible. Now, he is seeking reelection to represent the next generation of courageous leaders who are willing to take on the gun lobby and stand up for what’s right.
