Representative Jared Moskowitz knows the deep pain gun violence can inflict on a community. In February 2018, his hometown of Parkland, Florida, became the site of one of the deadliest school shootings in modern American history when 17 students and staff were killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
At the time, Representative Moskowitz served his community in the Florida House of Representatives, and he worked with the families of victims to pass the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act into law. This comprehensive gun violence prevention, school safety, and mental health package, which is named for Representative Moskowitz’s alma mater, raised the age to buy a gun from 18 to 21, established a three-day waiting period for all gun purchases, expanded background checks, banned bump stocks, and created extreme risk protection order laws that empower law enforcement to take guns away from especially dangerous individuals. Motivated by a desire to keep Floridian communities safe, Representative Moskowitz assumed the role of director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management in 2019, and later won election to a seat on the Broward County Commission in 2022.
Since he was elected to Congress in 2022, Representative Moskowitz has become one of the foremost gun safety champions in the US House. In office, he’s introduced and cosponsored several meaningful pieces of legislation to curb our country’s epidemic of violence, including the 3D Printed Gun Safety Act, which would prevent the manufacturing of ghost guns; the EAGLES Act, which would reauthorize and expand the National Threat Assessment Center program and add safety initiatives to prevent school violence; and Jaime’s Law, which would require instant background checks to prevent criminals from illegally purchasing ammunition.
Recent tragedies have made it clear that the voices of those impacted by gun violence need to be heard in DC—and that we need to reelect the gun safety champions doing the work to save lives in office this fall. With Representative Jared Moskowitz continuing to help to lead the way in Congress, we know that commonsense solutions that will help to curb America’s epidemic of gun violence can be signed into law and communities across the country will never again have to endure the same pain felt in Parkland.
