Nikema Williams

US House Georgia — 5th District Democrat
Incumbent2024
Representative Nikema Williams has been a fierce advocate for social justice throughout her political and professional career, and she has proudly represented Georgia’s Fifth District in the Congress since 2021. As the former vice president of public policy for Planned Parenthood Southeast and as the deputy political director at the National Domestic Workers Alliance, Representative Williams has always centered the voices of those who are most marginalized in her work. As the chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia and as a former member of the Georgia State Senate, she has consistently proven herself to be a fearless advocate for her community and has never backed down from a challenge—an attribute that makes her such a powerful gun safety champion in Congress.

As a mother of a Black son in America, Representative Williams has worked tirelessly to ensure a safer world for her son and for so many other children and families like her own. In the House, Representative Williams has helped pass legislation to expand background checks to all gun sales and to prevent those with a history of hate-fueled violence from obtaining a firearm.  During her first term in office, she introduced the Securing All Firearms Effectively and Safely (SAFES) Act, which would incentivize safe storage by creating a 90% refundable tax credit up to $500 for individuals or $1,000 for couples who properly lock up their firearms. She has also cosponsored legislation to properly fund community violence intervention programs needed to break deadly cycles of violence and crack down on the proliferation of untraceable ghost guns. In 2022, she joined colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass the landmark Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which became the first significant gun safety measure signed into law in nearly 30 years.

Representative Williams’s predecessor, the late Congressman John Lewis, often talked about the need to make “good trouble” to get things done—and we know that in Representative Nikema Williams, Georgians have yet another champion who will always fight back against indifference and inaction until real change is achieved. Voters must send her back to Washington DC this fall, where we know she will play a key role in securing many future victories in the fight to end gun violence.

We are proud to endorse Nikema Williams for the US House of Representatives.
