Representative Sylvia Garcia has dedicated her life to her community and to public service. As a social worker and legal aid lawyer early in her professional career, she protected our community’s most vulnerable, old and young, and ensured no one was forgotten. In the Texas Senate, she worked to push back on dangerous open carry policies that flooded her state’s streets with unchecked weapons—and now, she’s continuing this important work by advocating for the passage of desperately needed gun safety laws as a member of the House Gun Violence Prevention Taskforce.
In recent years, Texas has been home to some of the deadliest mass shootings in modern American history, from Uvalde to El Paso to Sutherland Springs. Representative Garcia is working tirelessly to change the trends in her state by advancing commonsense solutions in Congress. Since taking office in 2018, she’s worked across the aisle to champion legislation to expand background checks to all gun sales, incentivize gun owners to safely store their weapons, and disarm domestic abusers. In 2022, Representative Garcia proudly supported the landmark Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which became the first major gun safety bill signed into law in nearly 30 years and made the largest federal investment in community violence intervention programs in American history. While this lifesaving legislation marked a significant step forward in the fight to curb our country’s epidemic of violence, Representative Garcia knows there’s still so much to do—and she’s committed to taking on the gun lobby for as long as it takes to make America safer.
Now more than ever, Texans need real champions advocating on their behalf on Capitol Hill—especially as Republicans in the state have fought to re-gerrymander congressional districts in a dangerous attempt to hold on to power in Washington DC. With so much on the line, voters must mobilize like never before to ensure that Representative Sylvia Garica is reelected this year and can continue to use her strong voice in Congress to bolster public safety. As one of our country’s foremost champions on this issue, she knows that we can and must do more to protect our children.
