Representative Veronica Escobar is a third-generation El Pasoan who has dedicated her life to serving the people of Texas. In 2018, she made history as one of the first two Latinas elected to represent her state in Congress, and became the first woman to represent her West Texas district. As a former El Paso county commissioner and county judge, Congresswoman Escobar developed key leadership skills that made her an effective champion in the fight to end gun violence and a leading member of the House Judiciary Committee in her early terms, and which now make her equally adept at supporting key violence reduction programs as a member of the House Appropriations Committee.
For Congresswoman Escobar, ending gun violence is personal. Just eight months into her first term in Congress, a radical right-wing gunman opened fire inside a Walmart in Representative Escobar’s community, killing 23 people and wounding 23 more. In the wake of this hate-driven attack, she vowed to take action to address the root causes of the gun violence epidemic and to champion policies that would prevent future loss of life—particularly by highlighting the dangers of hateful, racist rhetoric when coupled with America’s weak gun laws. In the years since the El Paso shooting, Congresswoman Escobar has made good on her word by introducing critically important bills like the Disarm Hate Act, which would prevent individuals convicted of violent misdemeanor hate crimes from purchasing or possessing firearms; the End Domestic Terrorism Act, which would allow US law enforcement to prosecute certain mass shootings as acts of terrorism; and the Stop Arming Cartels Act, which would combat the resale of so-called sniper rifles to transnational criminal organizations operating in Mexico and other Latin American countries. Congresswoman Escobar has also cosponsored and voted to pass numerous other gun safety measures, including legislation to expand background checks to all gun sales, and provisions to strengthen safe storage requirements. Additionally, in 2022, she joined colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which was the first major gun safety bill to be signed into law in nearly 30 years.
We know that in Representative Escobar, Texans have a champion like no other. She will always work to ensure that no community has to experience a tragedy like hers did, and we cannot afford to lose a courageous leader like her in Congress. We must do everything possible to ensure that Congresswoman Veronica Escobar is reelected this November so she can continue to lead efforts to create a safer future for every Texan family as a part of a restored gun safety majority.
