Legal and Lethal—9 Products That Could Be the Next Bump Stock
The gun industry is putting public safety at risk by manufacturing extremely lethal firearms designed to skirt the federal laws established to keep us safe
WASHINGTON D.C. — After bump stocks made the Las Vegas mass shooting the deadliest in American history, Giffords unveiled a new report highlighting extremely lethal firearms and devices, like bump stocks, that are being marketed by gun manufacturers. The report released today includes nine examples of firearms and devices currently on the market that are not classified as registered weapons. Because these weapons are not subject to the additional regulation and oversight under the National Firearms Act (NFA)—which includes a mandatory background check—they can easily end up in the hands of criminals and endanger the public.

Giffords—the gun violence organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, combat veteran and retired NASA astronaut, Captain Mark Kelly—are calling on Congress to update federal gun laws so these accessories can’t turn a firearm into a military-style weapon.
Bump stocks are attached to a semi-automatic rifle, increasing the rate of fire to nearly that of a machine gun. Las Vegas proved that gun accessories can be used to threaten public safety. While certain kinds of categories of firearms—like machine guns—are registered under the NFA, modern devices like bump stocks have been built to evade the NFA’s requirements.

- Banning the future manufacturing of bump stocks;
- Banning the transfer of bump stocks in current circulation from one person to another;
- Requiring existing bump stocks that are already in circulation to be registered to their current owner under the National Firearms Act;
- Dedicating additional resources to ATF to enforce our nation’s gun laws and deal with a surge in NFA weapons applications;
- Requiring gun stores to report multiple sales of all firearms, not just handguns, to ATF.
