Giffords Endorses Mike Levin for Congress in California

The endorsement comes as part of Giffords’ #VoteCourage Campaign to elect gun reform candidates nationwide

July 18, 2018 — Giffords, the gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Captain Mark Kelly, announced its endorsement of Mike Levin’s  campaign in California’s 49th congressional district.  Captain Kelly and former Congresswoman Giffords came to an event in the region today in support of Mike Levin’s congressional campaign.

When it comes to gun violence prevention, environmental lawyer Mike Levin takes his lead from the courageous young people in his district calling for change, not the gun lobby. He has advocated for a federal ban on the purchase of assault weapons and requiring background checks on all gun sales. Mike is determined to keep the issue of gun violence at the forefront of his campaign.

“Mike is the kind of champion we need in Congress; someone determined to keep our families and communities safe,” said former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, co-founder of Giffords. “California deserves leaders on Capitol Hill who will always prioritize protecting public safety before advancing the agenda of the corporate gun lobby. Leaders determined to take action to protect our schools, streets and neighborhoods. We are proud to endorse Mike because he has shown leadership and courage to do what’s right not only for the 49th district, but for all American communities who want to see an end to gun violence.”

Levin is running in an open seat to replace retiring Republican representative Darrell Issa. Mike’s opponent, Diane Harkey, received an A-rating from the National Rifle Association.

Giffords’  #VoteCourage campaign  is aimed at electing gun safety advocates to Congress and defeating politicians who have historically worked against gun reform, or done nothing at all to prevent gun violence. The political program targets incumbents in mostly suburban districts and uses a mixture of TV and digital advertising, on-the-ground organizing, and a voter registration push to create momentum for meaningful progress on gun safety.
