Giffords, G-PAC Endorses Kwame Raoul for Attorney General in Illinois
Raoul is the only candidate in the race who supports cracking down on illegal gun trafficking in Illinois
September 20, 2018 — Giffords, the gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Captain Mark Kelly, and G-PAC, a political action committee working to elect candidates in Illinois committed to protecting communities from gun violence, announced their endorsement of Kwame Raoul for Illinois Attorney General.
Statement from former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, co-founder of Giffords:
“America experienced three of the deadliest mass shootings in modern history in just the past year. Over 38,000 people in our country were killed by a gun in 2016. Illinois has not been immune to this deadly crisis – somebody is killed by a gun in the state every seven hours. Kwame Raoul understands the toll this epidemic takes on communities like Chicago, the city he grew up in.
“Whether he’s in a courtroom or at the statehouse advocating for legislation, Raoul has always fought to keep guns out of dangerous hands. He’s never forgotten the consequences if we fail to act. His courage, determination, and experience mean Kwame is ready to be the Attorney General that Illinois needs. We can expect that Kwame won’t back down when it comes to saving lives. That’s why Giffords is proud to support him and urges voters in Illinois to join their voices with ours and elect Kwame to office.”
Statement from Kathleen Sances, President and CEO of GPAC:
“Corrupt gun dealers in Illinois flood our cities and towns with over 4000 crime guns every year. We learned yesterday that Kwame Raoul’s opponent is opposed to a bipartisan measure that passed the General Assembly with a wide margin of support in May that will save lives by holding gun dealers accountable and reducing the number of guns getting into the hands of criminals.”
“Born and raised in Chicago, Kwame Raoul understands the toll gun violence takes on our children and families and that’s why he sponsored this lifesaving legislation. A former Cook County State’s Attorney, Raoul focused on holding criminals accountable when they used guns illegally. Since then, Raoul has worked in Springfield determined to make a difference, with a proven track record of expanding background checks, preventing straw purchases, and working to reduce guns in schools. As Attorney General, Kwame Raoul will continue addressing the issue of gun violence in Illinois.”
