Giffords Responds to the Confirmation of Cory T. Wilson to Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals

Wilson is the 200th Trump judge confirmed

June 24, 2020 — Giffords issued the following statement after the Senate approved the nomination of Cory T. Wilson to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals today. The confirmation makes Wilson the 200th judge confirmed for a seat on a federal court during Trump’s presidency.

Adam Skaggs, Chief Counsel & Policy Director:

“Cory Wilson’s pledge of allegiance to the gun lobby should have disqualified him from a lifetime judicial appointment. Instead, Wilson will be able to advance his extreme and irregular views on gun policy as a judge on the second most powerful court in the nation. Today, the Senate failed our judicial system and the American people.

“Last week, the Supreme Court declined to take up a host of Second Amendment challenges, signaling once again that lifesaving gun safety laws do not conflict with the Second Amendment. This recognition is threatened by the confirmation of gun lobby extremists like Cory Wilson who are determined to impose the gun lobby’s extreme, absolutist view of Second Amendment rights on the nation.

“Senate Republicans must be held accountable for advancing unqualified judges at the expense of meaningfully addressing a crisis of gun violence that takes American lives every day.”
