August 11, 2020 — Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, co-founder of the gun safety organization Giffords, hailed the selection of gun safety champion Senator Kamala Harris as Joe Biden’s vice presidential running mate. Statement from former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, co-founder of Giffords:

“Throughout her career, Senator Kamala Harris has never held back from taking on the gun lobby and fighting for policies that save lives. She is everything we need in a vice president: A fierce, compassionate, and strong leader who is willing to fight for progress. As we move closer to November, we are committed to doing everything we can to elect a gun safety president and vice president. I am excited to support my friends Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, two leaders we know will put the safety of Americans first.”

Kamala Harris has been working to keep her communities safe from gun violence since beginning her career as a prosecutor in the early 1990s. As the attorney general of California, she prioritized retrieving firearms that had fallen into the wrong hands and fighting in court to uphold the state’s effective gun laws.

After being elected to the United States Senate in 2016 from California, Kamala Harris continued her fight for stronger gun laws. As part of her run for president in 2020 she announced a bold, comprehensive gun violence prevention platformand made the issue a priority throughout her campaign by participating in events like the Giffords and March For Our Lives gun safety forum last fall
