Xavier Becerra a Strong Choice to Confront Public Health Crises Facing America as Head of Health & Human Services

Washington, DC — Giffords, the gun violence prevention organization co-founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, supports President-elect Joe Biden’s decision to select Xavier Becerra to run the Health & Human Services department at a time when the nation is dealing with multiple public health challenges, including gun violence. As a member of Congress, Becerra fought to deliver health insurance to millions of Americans and as Attorney General of California, he fought to defend the Affordable Care Act and other legislation that protects California communities.

Statement from Peter Ambler, Giffords Executive Director:

“After four years of Donald Trump, Americans desperately need strong leadership from the top to confront public health crises like the coronavirus pandemic and gun violence. Xavier Becerra is a superb choice to take charge of Health & Human Services, which will have one of the most critical missions in the Biden-Harris Administration. Becerra has an impressive record of taking action to protect and improve public health, he’s been a partner in the fight against gun violence, never backing down from special interests like the gun lobby in his mission to save lives. We look forward to working with him and the rest of the cabinet to address gun violence.”
