Domestic Terrorists Use Guns to Threaten our Democracy

Washington, DC – Today, federal prosecutors in Maryland recommended that two neo-Nazis receive 25 years in prison for plotting to assassinate Virginia Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn.

Peter Ambler, Giffords Executive Director

“The threats of violence against Virginia Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn are reprehensible and federal prosecutors are right to take it seriously.

Armed extremists pose a grave threat to our democracy. The white supremacists arrested for their plot to attack are just the latest example of how gun absolutists use their weapons to intimidate and disrupt our core democratic processes. We cannot allow armed hate to tear our nation apart.

For years, the gun industry has used fear to divide us and drive gun sales. They have even perverted the meaning of the Second Amendment to validate insurrectionist ideology, with neo-Nazis and far-right fringe groups using the gun lobby’s playbook in their efforts to weaken our democracy. We don’t have to accept their premise that we should live in fear of others and resent our government. We must reject their view that the only way to be safe is to arm yourself.”
