Giffords Endorses Shontel Brown for the US House of Representatives

WASHINGTON, DCGiffords PAC, the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, announced today it is endorsing Councilwoman Shontel Brown for the US House of Representatives in Ohio’s 11th congressional district. Councilwoman Brown has proven to be a passionate public servant. As a former member of the Warrensville Heights City Council and current member of the Cuyahoga County Council, she has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of her constituents and strengthen public safety. In 2017, Councilwoman Brown made history as the first woman and the first Black person to be elected chair of the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party.

Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords:

“Councilwoman Brown has been a longstanding advocate for ending gun violence. It takes courage to stand up to the gun lobby, and Councilwoman Brown has it in spades. Ohioans understand that commonsense gun laws keep us all safe. I know Councilwoman Brown will be a fearless advocate for her constituents, and I’m proud to support her in her bid for Congress.

“We need more leaders in the House who will do what it takes to make our communities safer and protect the rights of law-abiding gun owners. Councilwoman Brown is up for the challenge. We know that she will never stop working on behalf of Ohioans.”

Councilwoman Shontel Brown:

“Thank you to the Giffords PAC for your endorsement for Congress this November. I have long admired the work of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and supported efforts to decrease gun violence at home. As a County Councilmember, I championed policy to create a text 9-1-1 emergency system to provide victims of domestic violence with alternate means to request help. In Washington, I will continue to work to end gun violence and partner with Giffords to create safer communities in America.”

In the face of rising homicide rates in her community, Councilwoman Brown has come out with a strong plan to address gun violence. She is a staunch proponent of investing in community violence intervention programs, and she is committed to passing legislation to expand background checks to all gun sales. By working to hold gun manufacturers accountable for the harm their products cause and advocating for the closure of loopholes that allow perpetrators of domestic violence to access firearms, Councilwoman Brown will help keep the people of Cleveland and its surrounding areas safe from the devastating impacts of gun violence.

Once elected, she will be a vital addition to the current gun safety majority in the US House. Giffords is proud to endorse Shontel Brown for the US House of Representatives in Ohio’s 11th congressional district.
