“How many more children will we allow to die before enough is enough?” Statement from Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords on Michigan High School Mass Shooting

Washington, DC
– Today, three students were killed and six others, including a teacher, were injured after another student opened fire at a Michigan high school. Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who leads and founded the gun violence prevention organization Giffords, released the following statement:

Statement from former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords:

“My heart breaks knowing that three high school students in Michigan will never receive their diplomas because their lives were taken in a senseless act of gun violence. Their families and their community will never be the same. The students who were injured and the students who witnessed this traumatic event will never be the same.

We can express outrage and heartbreak over mass shooting after mass shooting and over the community violence, domestic violence, and firearm suicide that take 100 American lives daily, but it means nothing if our politicians refuse to act. How many more children will we allow to die before enough is enough?

Every day that our country does not pass lifesaving gun laws is another day that we fail our children. This tragedy didn’t have to happen. It’s long past time for our elected leaders to stand up to the gun lobby and pass commonsense gun safety laws. Our children’s lives—all of our lives—depend on it.”
