Giffords Endorses Lt. Governor John Fetterman for United States Senate

Washington DC — Today,Giffords PAC, the gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, announced its endorsement of Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman for the United States Senate in Pennsylvania. In April, Giffords PAC hosted a gun safety forum in Philadelphia where Lt. Gov. Fetterman discussed rising rates of gun violence across his state and the need for commonsense legislative action.

Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords:

“For years, Lieutenant Governor Fetterman has been a powerful voice for Pennsylvanians who have lost their lives to gun violence, and I have no doubt that he will continue this fight in the Senate. Like most of us in this fight, Lieutenant Governor Fetterman knows firsthand the devastation of gun violence. As mayor of Braddock and then as lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania, he has worked to reduce gun homicides in communities across the state. At our recent gun safety forum in Pennsylvania, he made it clear that he isn’t afraid of the NRA and will stand for commonsense gun safety measures that will keep communities safe. I am proud to back Lieutenant Governor Fetterman in his bid for US Senate.”

Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman:

“Thank you to Giffords for their endorsement. My proudest accomplishment as Mayor of Braddock was going five and a half years without the loss of life due to gun violence. We need to pass comprehensive, commonsense gun safety legislation at the federal level. I look forward to getting this done as your next U.S. Senator. I am proud to work with Giffords in the fight for a safer America, and I am truly honored to have their endorsement in this race.”

Proudly born and raised in Pennsylvania, Lt. Gov. Fetterman got his start by joining AmeriCorps, where he fought to address inequality and started a GED program in his hometown of Braddock, Pennsylvania. While running this program, Lt. Gov. Fetterman tragically lost two of his students to gun violence. Like so many in the gun safety movement, Lt. Gov. Fetterman turned tragedy into action and successfully ran for mayor in an effort to save lives and make his town a safer place for all.

As mayor, Lt. Gov. Fetterman implemented numerous initiatives to lower the chances that another family would lose a loved one to senseless gun violence. He focused on breaking the cycle of violence in Braddock by working with the police department to develop a community policing model focused on reducing gun deaths and homicides. In the five and a half years following the creation of this model, Braddock did not record a single homicide or any loss of life from gun violence. In 2018, he was elected to serve as lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania, and in this capacity, he has been a passionate advocate for public safety and criminal justice reform. In office, Lt. Gov. Fetterman notably hosted listening tours in all 67 of Pennsylvania’s counties and championed commonsense solutions to America’s epidemic of gun violence, like passing universal background checks.

As both a responsible gun owner and someone who has suffered the pain of losing a close connection to gun violence, Lt. Gov. Fetterman intimately understands the need to implement federal gun safety laws. In the Senate, he’ll be a leading voice for lifesaving measures that will keep Pennsylvania communities safe. Giffords PAC is proud to endorse Lt. Gov. John Fetterman for US Senate.
