Giffords Lauds New York Governor for Passing Crucial Legislation in Response to Supreme Court Decision
Washington, DC — Giffords, the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, lauded Governor Kathy Hochul, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Speaker Carl Heastie, Senators Zellnor Myrie and Brian Kavanagh, and Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz for quickly responding to the Supreme Court’s extremist and dangerous ruling on concealed carry in Bruen.
“Eight days ago, the Supreme Court issued an extreme opinion that overturned more than a hundred years of law on the carrying of guns in New York,” said David Pucino, Giffords Law Center Deputy Chief Counsel. “But New York was ready. The omnibus bill enacted in today’s extraordinary session will mitigate the harm from the Court’s decision, while conforming to its guidance on permissible gun regulation.”
The omnibus bill includes a number of important policies, including training requirements for those who want to carry a concealed gun, robust vetting in the application process, protecting sensitive places where guns should not be carried, removal of the burden on property owners to inform others that guns are not allowed on their property while allowing property owners to opt-in, and strengthening New York law on the safe storage of firearms.
