Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords Statement on Shooting in Walmart in Chesapeake, Virginia

Washington DC Giffords, the gun violence prevention organization led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, responds to the news of a tragic shooting last night at a Walmart in Chesapeake, Virginia. According to recent reports, six people were killed and at least four were injured.

Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords:

“This week is meant to be a time for gathering with family. Instead, six families have lost loved ones and an entire community has been turned on its head by the actions of yet another mass shooter. My heart aches for those who were killed, injured, and traumatized by this shooting. The senseless violence perpetrated by the shooter at the Chesapeake Walmart is not an isolated incident. Our country is still reeling from news of the attack against the LGBTQ community in Colorado Springs. Yesterday a Walmart became the site of the latest tragedy. But tomorrow can be different. We can and must do more to protect our communities from gun violence.”

Lisa Harter, Senior Ambassador, Giffords Gun Owners for Safety, VA Chapter:

“I’m devastated and angry to wake up to the news that my state of Virginia is home to yet another mass shooting. Six families will be mourning this Thanksgiving instead of celebrating. Responsible gun owners understand that these tragedies are not the price we pay for freedom. I’m calling on my fellow gun owners to stand up against violence and extremism. We must pass commonsense gun safety laws to save lives.”
