GIFFORDS Applauds Maryland Leaders for Prohibiting Guns in Sensitive Places

Washington DC — Today, GIFFORDS, the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, lauded Governor Wes Moore for signing the Gun Safety Act of 2023, SB001 and HB824 into law. The Gun Safety Act will update the law on licensing firearms and set new and critically important parameters on where concealed firearms can be carried. It will also require those who want to carry guns onto private property to first receive permission from the property owner. The updates follow the US Supreme Court’s decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen, which disrupted the standards that states like Maryland use to decide who could carry guns in public.

Agustin Cabrera, GIFFORDS State Legislative Manager:

“Gun violence poses a serious public health and safety threat to communities in Maryland and across the country. The presence of firearms in sensitive places like schools and government buildings can intimidate people and lead to violence. We applaud Governor Moore and lawmakers in Maryland, especially Senator Waldstreicher and Delegate Clippinger, for helping to protect Marylanders and their children when they enter a school, government facility, or any other sensitive area.”

GIFFORDS also celebrates the passage of SB858, Jaelynn’s Law, which provides for the safe storage of firearms.
