Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords Remembers Victims of Mass Shooting at Oxford High School, Two Years Later

Washington DC — Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, founder of the gun violence prevention group GIFFORDS, released the following statement honoring the victims and survivors of the mass shooting at Oxford High School in Michigan two years ago today. Four students were shot and killed, and seven more people were injured. In the wake of the shooting, GIFFORDS worked with survivors in the community and Michigan legislators to pass significant gun safety legislation including universal background checks.

“Today, I’m holding the families of Madisyn Baldwin, Tate Myre, Hana St. Juliana, and Justin Shilling, as well as the entire Oxford community, close to my heart. Schools should be places of learning and growing, not fear. But two years ago at Oxford High School, students and teachers were terrified for their lives. Parents once again anxiously waited to hear from their children, wondering whether they even would. We remember the victims and survivors today and forever as we fight to ensure another community doesn’t have to feel this pain. While they’ve taken great strides over the past year, Michigan’s leaders must continue to take steps toward a safer future free from gun violence.”

Madeline Johnson, Survivor and Co-President of No Future Without Today

“Two years ago today, my school went under lock down. It wasn’t a drill that we’d practiced so many times before, but a traumatizing and fear-filled moment that forever changed so many lives, including my own. November 30 now marks a dark day for students, teachers, and parents in the Oxford community. I’m fighting for gun safety and prevention laws so no other student has to go through what my friends and I did.”
