Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords Reflects Six Years after School Shooting in Parkland
Washington DC — Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, founder of gun violence prevention group GIFFORDS, released the following statement honoring the victims and survivors of the mass shooting six years ago at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords
“Six years ago today, a gunman entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, killed 17 people, injured 17 more, and caused immeasurable trauma and horror. I know it never gets easier to mark these days of loss and heartbreak, no matter how many years pass. I’m thinking of the friends and families who should be celebrating Valentine’s Day with their loved ones but are instead mourning the lives they lost. Following this tragedy, so many survivors became courageous advocates against gun violence. I’ll always work with them to build a safer future.”
Samantha Barrios, Florida State Director
“February 14th is traditionally a day meant to reflect love and unity. But for Floridians, we remember the 17 lives taken, the 17 more that were injured, and the countless others whose lives changed on this dark day six years ago. I’m thinking of every survivor who I’ve met and worked with as they navigate difficult paths to healing from the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas. Every child deserves a safe future from gun violence. We’re fighting for it together.”
