GIFFORDS Announces Roger Garza as Texas State Director

Garza is a seasoned political and policy strategist who will lead the organization’s work in the Lone Star State

Washington DC — Today, GIFFORDS, the national gun safety organization founded by former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, announced a key hire to lead its work in Texas. Roger Garza will serve as Texas state director to oversee GIFFORDS’ state-based strategy across all aspects of the organization’s work, including policy, coalition building, political campaigns and gun-safety candidate support, community violence intervention, research, implementation, and litigation programs.

GIFFORDS Executive Director Emma Brown:

“Gabby and I are excited to welcome Roger to the GIFFORDS team. Roger has spent the last two decades winning tough battles across Texas, and he understands how deeply gun violence impacts communities across the state. From electing gun safety champions to passing stronger laws and supporting survivors and impacted communities, we know that Roger is uniquely equipped to spearhead our mission of saving lives in the Lone Star state.”

GIFFORDS Texas State Director Roger Garza:

“As a San Antonio native, Texas is my home. I love the state and its people. My previous work in six legislative sessions and across dozens of campaigns gave me a clear understanding that most Texans are responsible, law-abiding gun owners. But I also know that our communities refuse to live in fear of losing a loved one at the hands of bad actors and gun violence. I look forward to joining the GIFFORDS family and state stakeholders across Texas to strengthen our mission of saving lives”.

Over the last decade, Texas has experienced mass shootings while the rate of firearm-related deaths in the state continues to surge to levels not seen since the 1990s.

Before joining Giffords, Garza served as the Deputy National Political Director for the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, chief strategist for Congressman Colin Allred’s election in 2018, defeating an 11-term incumbent. His work in Texas helped to shape the “fairest US House of Representatives map in 40 years.” His work in six Texas legislatures allowed him to work on the ground with communities across Texas, and his data-driven strategies on dozens of Texas campaigns have proven successful in all corners of the state. Most recently, Garza ran a Texas-based political consulting firm.

Roger Garza joins a growing GIFFORDS Texas team across Austin, Dallas, and Houston.
