GIFFORDS Praises Colorado for Protecting Election Sites, Sensitive Locations
Washington DC —Today, GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, applauded Colorado Governor Jared Polis for signing a bill that would protect polling locations from armed intimidation and prohibit guns in sensitive areas, including schools and government buildings.
Agustin Cabrera, State Legislative Manager
“Colorado has passed a commonsense, popular safety measure that will protect our children in schools and voters at election sites. We’ve witnessed the horror guns cause in schools and the threat of armed intimidation to our electoral process, but Coloradans are taking action to protect our kids and democracy. State Senators Jaquez Lewis and Chris Kolker, and State Representatives Kyle Brown and Mandy Lindsay diligently worked on this bill and made sure it crossed the finish line. We are grateful for Governor Polis’s signature on this bill to protect polling sites, schools, and government buildings from armed intimidation and gun violence.”
In recent years, the use of guns to intimidate voters, elected officials, and poll workers has become a serious threat to the country’s democracy. GIFFORDS’s Guns & Democracy project points legislators to commonsense solutions like those in the Colorado bill signed today. Last September, GIFFORDS Law Center, in collaboration with the Brennan Center for Justice, also published a report detailing rising threats to our elections and providing steps states can take to protect voters and election officials from armed intimidation.
