GIFFORDS PAC endorses Matt Meyer for governor of Delaware

WASHINGTON — Today, GIFFORDS PAC, the national gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, endorsed New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer to be the next governor of Delaware.

“As a former teacher, small business owner, and current New Castle County Executive, Matt Meyer understands the importance of public service and has always prioritized the well-being of his constituents. As county executive, he has fought tirelessly to end senseless gun violence and implemented the most comprehensive set of gun safety laws in the county’s history. Matt Meyer is the kind of leader we need in Dover—someone who will always put the safety of Delewareans first and stand up to the gun lobby at every turn. I am proud to endorse his candidacy for governor,” said former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords.

“As a former public school teacher, I witnessed firsthand the devastating impact gun violence had on my students and their families. Too many lives have been cut short, and too many futures stolen. As County Executive, I took on the gun lobby and fought for commonsense measures to protect our children and keep our communities safe. As Governor, I will continue that fight—championing gun safety laws that protect Delawareans, while ensuring that we put the safety of our schools, neighborhoods, and families first. GIFFORDS PAC has been a leader in the movement to end gun violence in America, and I couldn’t be more excited to partner with them in this critical effort,” said New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer.

In his current role leading Delaware’s most populous county, Meyer has made ending violence and bolstering public safety a top priority. In office, he’s helped fund the Delaware Coalition Against Gun Violence and led efforts to restrict individuals from bringing guns and ammunition into all county facilities. He’s also fought to require gun stores to install video surveillance, alarms, and other security measures to protect against theft. Under his leadership, violent and non-violent crime rates in areas policed by the county police he’s helped oversee dropped to historic lows, including a 44% decrease in shootings.
