GIFFORDS marks third anniversary of Bipartisan Safer Communities Act

WASHINGTON GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention group led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords released the following statement marking three years since the enactment of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act was the first significant federal gun safety legislation in nearly 30 years, and won the support of every Democrat and 15 Republicans in the U.S. Senate.

“The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act was an enormous step forward in the fight against gun violence. It enhanced background checks for young people, cracked down on gun traffickers and made a historic investment in critical community violence prevention programs and school mental health programs. However, this progress is now threatened by the Trump administration, which has cancelled community violence intervention grants, slashed school mental health funding and more. Americans are sick of gun violence and politicians putting special interests over their lives. If the president was serious about law and order, he would combat gun violence and crime, instead of making it worse,” said GIFFORDS Executive Director Emma Brown.
