Senate Appropriators protect critical funding for gun violence prevention research

WASHINGTON GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention group led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released the following statement on the Senate Appropriations Committee’s advancement of the FY2026 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act. The bill, which received bipartisan support from the committee, would maintain last year’s funding levels for a number of important programs that fund gun-related research, support victims of community violence and prevent suicide.

“Guns are the number one killer of kids and young people in the United States and gun violence prevention research is critical to fighting this epidemic. Fortunately, Senate appropriators recognized the critical need to fund these programs,” said GIFFORDS Executive Director Emma Brown. “We know more funding is needed, but as the Trump administration tries to slash these programs, it is vital that Congress steps up to support them. We hope Senators from both sides of the aisle support this funding when it comes to the floor.”
