GIFFORDS: House Republicans let rogue gun dealers go

House Republicans on the Judiciary Committee vote for FIREARM Act, barring law enforcement from protecting Americans

WASHINGTON GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention group led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, denounced the House Committee on the Judiciary’s approval of H.R. 3770, the FIREARM Act. This bill prohibits law enforcement from taking enforcement action against certain rogue gun dealers who have broken the law. For example, under this bill, a dealer who repeatedly fails to report stolen firearms in a timely manner could “correct” their error and do a late report. This bill would prohibit the attorney general from taking an enforcement action against the gun dealer, and it would allow that dealer to continue to sell firearms.

“Responsible gun dealers play a crucial role in keeping communities safe from crime and gun violence. It is their duty to follow the law and not sell guns to people who shouldn’t have them. Law enforcement work to hold rogue dealers accountable when they break the law, but the FIREARM Act makes it harder,” said GIFFORDS Executive Director Emma Brown. “House Republicans are making it easy for gun dealers to break the law and for criminals to get their hands on guns, all to help their gun company CEO donors make more money. House Republicans are making it clear that they don’t care about the lives that can be lost because of these reckless actions. We urge members of Congress to do what is right and oppose this bill if it comes to the House floor.”
