Gabby Giffords: Trump is violating the Constitution
WASHINGTON — Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, founder of the national gun violence prevention group GIFFORDS and a prominent gun owner herself, responded to President Trump and his administration’s continued attacks on Americans’ constitutional rights in the aftermath of the murder of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis over the weekend. The administration has falsely claimed that it’s illegal to bring a gun to a protest and Karoline Leavitt said, “Any gun owner knows when you are carrying a weapon and are confronted by law enforcement, you are raising the assumption of risk and the risk of force being used against you.”
“Alex Pretti was exercising his First Amendment right to protest and lawfully carrying a firearm when he was murdered by an ICE agent over the weekend. In their response, the Trump administration has attacked the First and Second Amendments. Every legal gun owner should be horrified. As a gun owner myself and the leader of GIFFORDS Gun Owners for Safety, I am alarmed by how brazenly the Trump administration is threatening our rights,” said former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. “Every American, no matter their party or beliefs, must speak out to defend the rule of law. This administration’s flagrant abuse of power must end and ICE operations in Minnesota must stop – they were never about public safety.”
