GIFFORDS PAC endorses Jocelyn Benson for Michigan governor

WASHINGTON —GIFFORDS PAC, the national gun violence prevention organization led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released the following statement endorsing Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson for governor of Michigan.

“As Secretary of State, Jocelyn Benson has fought to protect Michigan from armed political violence, and led on public safety. As governor, she will build on our historic progress in Michigan to save lives from gun violence and safeguard the futures of children and families across the Great Lakes State. Jocelyn Benson is the leader we need in Lansing in this critical moment. We are proud to endorse her today and look forward to helping her win in November,” said Congresswoman Giffords.

“As a mom of a 9 year old boy, I know how important it is to keep our kids and communities safe from gun violence.  That’s why I am so proud to have GIFFORDS PAC’s support and endorsement as I seek to serve as the next governor of Michigan. As Secretary of State I’ve worked to keep guns away from the ballot box, and have stood up to political violence — whether on my own front lawn, our state capitol building, or anywhere else in our state.  I’ll continue to prioritize this work as governor, working with anyone willing to get things done to keep all Michiganders safe and secure,” said Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.

Jocelyn Benson has pushed to make lives better for others in every role — from her time as a civil rights advocate to her historic tenure as the youngest woman to lead an accredited law school, and now as Michigan’s secretary of state. Secretary Benson has been particularly active around the need to keep children and families safe from senseless shootings and to tackle the dangerous rise in political violence. In the face of persistent threats to herself and her family, including armed protestors showing up on her front lawn, Secretary Benson fought to ensure Michiganders can safely and securely cast their ballots and worked with the state legislature to pass a law to ban guns at polling locations. As her state’s next governor, she’s determined to build on this progress by enacting additional commonsense gun reforms.
