Rep. Tom Barrett’s agenda fuels gun crime in Michigan as NRA convenes in Texas

Barrett’s extreme agenda puts Michigan families at risk while gun industry CEOs profit.

LANSING, Mich. — As the NRA’s annual meeting in Houston kicks off this week, Rep. Tom Barrett has made it clear in his first term that he takes his marching orders from the gun lobby.

During his time in the state legislature and now in the House, Tom Barrett has proudly and repeatedly voted to advance the gun industry’s interests over the safety of his constituents, earning himself an “A+” rating from the NRA — which has spent $72,407 in independent expenditures alone to send him to Congress.

“Michiganders want leaders who put their kids’ safety first, not the profits of their donors in the gun industry,” said GIFFORDS Executive Director Emma Brown. “Throughout his career, Congressman Barrett has consistently voted against commonsense background checks and safety trainings, while introducing legislation to remove critical concealed carry safeguards in the face of opposition from local law enforcement and his Republican colleagues in the state legislature. Fast forward nearly a decade later, Barrett championed theConstitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act last Congress, which would override Michigan’s concealed carry standards to recognize permits from states with much weaker or no standards at all.”

“As the NRA gathers in Texas for its annual meeting, voters in Michigan are fed up with partisans like Tom Barrett. Enough is enough — and it’s time to make a change at the ballot box this November,” Brown added.
