Gabby Giffords honors lives lost in Pulse shooting 10 years later

Orlando, Fla. — Today, GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released the following statement marking 10 years since the shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Forty-nine people were killed and 53 were injured in the shooting, which targeted the LGBTQ+ and Latino communities.

“I am honored to join friends and family of the victims and survivors this weekend as we honor the memory of those who were killed. My heart is with each and every one of the victims,” said former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. “Ten years ago, a hate-fueled shooting stole the lives of far too many members of Orlando’s LGBTQ+ and Latino communities. Despite this, they have not remained silent or lived their lives in fear, and have instead come together to raise their voices louder than ever. This shooting was possible because one bigoted person had easy access to deadly weapons — but Florida’s leaders still resist many commonsense gun safety laws. It’s time for a change. No community should have to experience this tragedy again.”

“The survivors and the families of the Pulse shooting victims have endured grief and injustice that no one should ever have to experience,” said Samantha Barrios, GIFFORDS Florida State Director. “Today, we are recognizing their pain, while also celebrating the memories of those who were lost. Every member of the LGBTQ+ community should be able to take pride in who they are while living a life free from fear and violence. I urge our lawmakers to stand up for change, and to pass commonsense gun safety laws that will protect all Floridians from gun violence.”

On Saturday, June 13, GIFFORDS will join the Human Rights Campaign and Equality Florida for a panel discussion on combating hate-fueled violence.
