ICYMI: Gabby Giffords, Cait Conley convene community conversation on public safety in NY-17

Giffords and Conley were joined by law enforcement, local leaders and community advocates to discuss how to reduce gun violence in the Hudson Valley

NEW YORK – Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, founder of the national gun violence prevention organization GIFFORDS, and Cait Conley, the Democratic nominee for New York’s 17th congressional district convened a community conversation on public safety this afternoon in Nyack, New York.

The discussion focused on ways to prevent gun violence and address violent crime, and featured Joe Rand, Mayor of Nyack and candidate for New York State Senate, Spring Valley Police Department’s Youth Detective, Andre Riobe and local gun safety advocates.

“From her six deployments defending our freedoms in places like Iraq and Afghanistan, to her time serving on the National Security Council, Cait Conley’s career has been anchored in keeping our country and communities safe. As your next Congresswoman, she will continue to put public safety over politics and focus on creating safer streets, classrooms and communities across the Hudson Valley,” said former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. “Rep. Mike Lawler has repeatedly shown he will cash checks from the gun lobby and take orders from President Trump instead of standing up for NY-17. The stakes of this race could not be higher and Cait Conley is the fighter that we need in Washington to work across the aisle to tackle gun violence and build a safer future.”

“It was an honor to have Gabby Giffords in NY-17 to lead such an important discussion on public safety and commonsense gun reform. It is incumbent upon all of us — public servants, community leaders, and law enforcement — to come together to create a safer future here in the Hudson Valley and beyond,” said Conley. “In Congress, my number one priority will always be protecting our families and communities — just as I have done my entire career.”

GIFFORDS PAC was early to endorse Conley last November and Congresswoman Giffords previously campaigned with Conley in Peeksville, NY this March.
