GIFFORDS Applauds Creation of White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention

GIFFORDS Pushed for Biden Administration to Form Office to Address America’s Gun Violence Epidemic

Washington DC — Today, GIFFORDS, the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, applauded the announcement that the White House is creating an Office of Gun Violence Prevention. GIFFORDS has worked closely with the Biden administration on gun violence prevention and recommended bringing together key leaders across the administration in the White House to develop a coordinated and sustained federal effort to address all aspects of gun violence in the United States before President Biden took office.

Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords:

“Gun violence tears apart communities in America every single day. It is a national epidemic that warrants dedicated leadership at the highest levels of our government. Before he took office, I wrote to President Biden, asking him to create ‘a White House-led interagency gun violence prevention task force to ensure leadership, expertise, and coherent policy making around gun safety priorities.’ Today, President Biden answered our calls by creating an Office of Gun Violence Prevention. Gun violence won’t be stopped overnight, but every step forward will save lives—and today’s announcement is a giant step forward. GIFFORDS is grateful to President Biden and his administration for their unwavering leadership in the fight for gun safety.”

After President Biden and Vice President Harris won election in November 2020, GIFFORDS and Center for American Progress published a detailed transition book outlining gun safety actions the Biden-Harris Administration should take to address gun safety comprehensively, including a detailed memo describing the creation of a gun violence taskforce. Additionally, Gabby Giffords sent a letter to then-President-elect Biden urging him to prioritize investments in community violence intervention, ban ghost guns, and create an office of violence prevention.
