GIFFORDS Applauds Governor Whitmer for Signing Commonsense Safety Legislation in Michigan

WASHINGTON —GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released the following statement applauding Governor Gretchen Whitmer for signing key bipartisan public safety bills into law, which GIFFORDS worked hard with state partners to pass in Michigan.

The legislation enacted today will expand Medicaid coverage to include community violence intervention services, helping to prevent violence before it even occurs. Notably, it also includes measures to promote safer firearm storage, enhance Michigan schools’ ability to respond swiftly to emergency threats, and require the Michigan State Police to keep dangerous firearms out of communities.

“For years, Michigan has been the site of too many gun violence tragedies, forcing countless families to live in constant fear of the next devastating shooting,” said Emma Brown, Executive Director of GIFFORDS. “We commend Governor Whitmer and Michigan’s legislative leaders for prioritizing the safety of our communities and saving Michigan lives. No one should have to fear for their safety in their homes, schools, workplaces, or anywhere else. I am grateful to see leaders in Michigan treat our gun crisis with the urgency it demands.”
