GUN SAFETY VICTORY: GIFFORDS PAC congratulates Governor-elect Spanberger

Incoming VA governor has long record fighting gun crime

WASHINGTON — Today, GIFFORDS PAC, the gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, congratulated Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger on her decisive victory in Virginia. GIFFORDS PAC was an early endorser of Spanberger and Congresswoman Giffords actively campaigned for her in recent months, including at a roundtable together in July and throughout the closing weeks of the election cycle. This past weekend, Giffords joined volunteers across Virginia to mobilize voters and get out the vote

“Congratulations to my friend, Governor-elect Spanberger, on her decisive win today. Over the past few months, I’ve traveled across the commonwealth and heard from Virginians who are sick and tired of gun safety bills being blocked by Governor Youngkin. They demanded change at the ballot box — they made it clear they want leaders who would finally put public safety ahead of politics and are committed to taking action to keep their communities safe. They will now have a governor who will do that in my friend Abigail. I look forward to working with her in Richmond to enact meaningful solutions that will save lives from gun violence and create a safer future for all Virginians,” said former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

Over her three terms in Congress, Governor-elect Spanberger was a strong supporter of commonsense gun safety reform and fought to pass background checks on all gun sales, red flag laws, measures to disarm abusive domestic partners, and lifesaving safe storage requirements — all of which culminated in her important vote on passing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first major gun safety bill to be enacted in nearly 30 years. Prior to her election to the U.S. House, she served as a federal law enforcement officer and worked on counterterrorism and nonproliferation cases at the CIA.
